I once received a pair of really good headphones as a gift. I listen to music and podcasts pretty much every day, so I ended up using them all the time. What I really liked about the gift was that it was very practical.

Sentence 1

I once received a pair of really good headphones as a gift.

- 搭配:receive sth as a gift 作为礼物收到某物、receive a letter from sb 收到某人的来信

- 辨析:receive 只陈述"到手"这个事实,accept 强调"愿意收下" — He received the offer but didn't accept it.

  • a pair of — 一副,一双

- 成双成对的物品用它计数:a pair of headphones / glasses / scissors / trousers

- 谓语看 pair:This pair of headphones is worth the price.

I need (a pair of) headphones.

I once lived in Shanghai.

I've been to Beijing only once.

Once you try it, you'll love it.

  • as a gift — 作为礼物

的身份":use it as a desk / treat him as a friend

- 同结构:as a reward 作为奖励、as a souvenir 作为纪念、as a joke 当个玩笑

I once received a pair of really good headphones as a gift. I once received a really nice watch as a graduation gift.

Sentence 2

I listen to music and podcasts pretty much every day, so I ended up using them all the time.

- 口语高频,≈ almost:pretty much every day / pretty much done

- 分开写是状语:I read every day.;连写 everyday 是形容词"日常的":everyday life

- end up + doing / in + 地点 / with + 结果:end up buying / end up in Paris / end up with a cold

We ended up talking for three hours.

  • all the time — 一直,总是

- He calls me all the time.

- 辨析:all the time(一直)vs every time(每一次)vs at all times(随时待命,正式)

You're on your phone all the time!

  • podcast /ˈpɒdkɑːst/ — 播客

- listen to podcasts on my way to work 通勤路上听播客

- 相关词:episode 一集、subscribe to a podcast 订阅播客

I listen to music and podcasts pretty much every day, so I ended up using them all the time. I work near a bakery, so I ended up buying bread every morning.

Sentence 3

What I really liked about the gift was that it was very practical.

  • what 从句 — 所……的事物

- What I liked about X = the thing I liked about X,

What I need is time. / Show me what you bought.

  • like about — 喜欢……

What do you like most about your job?

- 同样能接 love / hate / admire:What I hate about this phone is the battery.

- a practical gift / practical shoes

- 夸人也用它:He's very practical.

  • that 表语从句 — was that ...

The truth is that it works.

- 主语是 what / the thing / the point 这类空泛词时,that 从句负责给出具体内容

The truth is (that) nobody cares.

What I really liked about the gift was that it was very practical. I liked that it was practical What I love about mornings is that everything is quiet.
