A certain amount of pressure can actually be useful because it pushes people to stay focused and get things done. But it's a problem when people feel like they can never switch off. Over time, that can affect both their productivity and their personal lives.

Sentence 1

A certain amount of pressure can actually be useful because it pushes people to stay focused and get things done.

  • a certain amount of — 一定程度的

- a certain degree of risk — 一定程度的风险

- 类似结构:a certain number of people — 某些人

Did you like it?" "Actually, I loved it."

- put pressure on someone — 给某人施压

  • push someone to do something — 促使/推动某人做某事

- pushes people to stay focused — 促使人们保持专注

- 近义:drive / motivate someone to do

- It's hard to stay focused when you're tired.

- I have a lot to get done today. —

- 形容人:a person who gets things done — 一个执行力强的人

A certain amount of X can actually be useful because... stay focused and get things done

Sentence 2

But it's a problem when people feel like they can never switch off.

- I find it hard to switch off after work.

- feel like they can never...

- 辨析:feel like + 句子/名词(觉得)vs would like(想要)

- I feel like I'm always working. —

  • can never — 永远不能

- 对比 can't usually / can't always — 程度递增:usually → always → never

  • It's a problem when...

But it's a problem when...

But it's a problem when... 类似习语:wind down(逐渐放松)、unplug(数字排毒式的"拔插头")。

Sentence 3

Over time, that can affect both their productivity and their personal lives.

- = as time passes,强调渐进的变化过程

- Skills improve over time.

- 辨析:on time(准时)、in time(及时)、overtime(加班,连写)

- affect both A and B — 同时影响 A 和 B

- 高频辨析:affect(动词)vs effect(名词)— have an effect on

- Stress affects sleep. —

- a drop in productivity — 效率下降

  • both ... and ... 和……都

- both their productivity and their personal lives — 并列两个宾语

- Don't let work take over your personal life.

Over time, that can affect both A and B 是收尾句的标准模板——时间状语 over time 点出"慢性危害",代词 that 回指上一整句的现象(永远关不了机),can 用得克制(可能有影响,而不是必然),最后 both ... and 一并扫清工作和生活两个领域。
